Welcome

Welcome to the Department of
Health Management and Policy!

Message from the Interim Chair

While the Department of Health Management and Policy only came into existence on July 1, 2024, we are not new.  Rather, we are one of two thriving units formed from the Department of Public Health Sciences. Our creation is one of the many planned steps over the next several years as the College of Health and Human Services positions itself to become North Carolina’s second accredited School of Public Health, which itself expands upon the foundation established by the Department of Public Health Sciences.

The Department of Health Management and Policy’s mission is to advance health and health systems by developing knowledge and future leaders in management, policy, and research for the benefit of all. You will see this aim reflected in our teaching, service, and research efforts.

Our department houses the

We recognize the importance of increasing the diversity of health services leaders, with a special emphasis on individuals and groups historically underrepresented in university education who comprise the majority of the UNC Charlotte student body.  As such, our programs focus on preparing entry-level and early careerists to launch their careers. To ensure their academic success and support their ascendance in the workplace, we design our programs with their needs in mind.

Our faculty embrace their dual role of developing future leaders and advancing the knowledge base in support of equitable health systems.  As captured in our Research and Service Directory, their service extends beyond the classroom into the community and the profession while their scholarship impacts the healthcare delivery system and the larger policy environment.  Among these many efforts, of note are:

  • The Academy for Population Health Innovation (APHI). Led by Professor Mike Dulin, APHI connects our department and our college to Mecklenburg County Public Health and the other health departments across the Charlotte Region.
  • The UNC Charlotte Violence Prevention Center (VPC). Led by Associate Professor Apryl Alexander, the interdisciplinary VPC serves as a resource for transformative research, training, and technical assistance for communities, policymakers, and the public.

We look forward to the synergies this reorganization will bring and the resulting positive impact on our students and our communities. Let’s Shape What’s Next!
