New Faculty Spotlight: Winsor Schmidt

Winsor Schmidt has joined the Department of Public Health Sciences faculty as the Metrolina Medical Foundation Distinguished Professor of Public Policy on Health. Schmidt previously taught at the University of Louisville School of Medicine where he was the Endowed Chair/Distinguished Scholar in Urban Health Policy. Prior to his time in Louisville, he was the founding Department Chair of the Health Policy and Administration program at Washington State University.

As a licensed attorney and health law professor, Professor Schmidt has considerable experience in law and policy with special interest in Mental Health Law and Policy, Elder Law and Policy, Women’s Health Law and Policy, International Health Law and Policy, and Children’s Health Law and Policy.

Professor Schmidt is impressed with UNC Charlotte and its accomplishments, such as, its tremendous growth, new campus facilities, and large student population. More specifically, the MHA Program has made a noteworthy improvement in the US News and World Report rankings, currently sitting at 33. He also noted that UNC Charlotte is a Doctoral Research University, ranked in the top 30% of public universities by American City Business Journals.

In addition to his involvement with the Department of Public Health Sciences, Professor Schmidt plans to engage with the Interdisciplinary Ph. D. in Public Policy Program and the Gerontology Program.

Outside of his work at UNC Charlotte, he continues to serve on the Board of Directors for the National Committee for the Prevention of Elder Abuse and the Guardianship Advisory Board with the Guardianship Certificate Program offered by the University of Washington Educational Outreach Program. Professor Schmidt also continues to be involved in Washington by serving as a Subject Matter Expert with the National Guardianship Network WINGS (Working Interdisciplinary Network of Guardianship Stakeholders) in the Washington Administrative Office of the Courts.

Professor Schmidt’s outside interests include hiking, especially in Yellowstone, watching baseball, and playing tennis.
